To enhance our sewing skills we have decided to focus on making Aprons. We learnt how to make a pattern, from which we have been making many aprons to practise our sewing skills. The aprons are double sided with pockets and hand made ties. This continues to be a great project for practising the finer details of sewing and quality finishing.
WASTE TO WONDERFUL ---Textile Waste Project --- Our intention is to create a women' s making co-operative called Ourplace. A group to offer newly arrived refugee women, low income women and women at risk of social isolation a collective to belong to for friendship, access to cheap materials inspiration and hopefully one day extra income.

Focus on Mat Weaving
It has been fantastic to have the big mat weaving loom always around for anyone to learn. Many people have contributed to the project, using strips of scrap material kindly donated by the Resource Tip Shop. This is the second mat made during the workshops so far, and has provided a perfect place to start for those new to the group.
Focus on Indian Embroidery
One of the specific skills taught at the OurPlace Sewing workshops was Indian Embroidery. This is a hand sewing skill which involved creating a unique design, twining woollen thread and freehand stitching using traditional stitches. The women have used these skills to make small bags and decorate cushion covers.
The kids who come to the OurPlace Sewing Workshops have FUN while their mums learn.
The children who come with their mums to the OurPlace Sewing workshops are expertly cared for in a safe environment by Jess, our wonderful fully qualified child care specialist. They play and learn while their mums learn the art of sewing.

Sewing Machine Skills are Progressing at the Waste2Wonderful sewing workshops.
Thanks to the Tasmanian Community Fund the Waste2Wonderful workshops managed to purchase new sewing machines and overlockers. We are excited to be teaching women sewing machine skills which we are using to make dresses, cushions, and aprons.
Amazing Food with Great Company at Waste2Wonderful Workshops
It has been a fantastic pleasure to eat lunch at the Waste2Wonderful sewing workshops being held each Friday (from 10-2) at the Hobart Women's Health Centre. The women have cooked dishes from many different countries bringing exotic flavours and recipes to the group. It has been a highlight of the workshops and we have all enjoyed sitting together, talking and sharing food.
